The air filter can be compared to the lung of a car. It is designed to eliminate the dust contained in the air taken in by the engine. Depending on its capacity, an engine turning at full speed can take in from 200 to 500 m3 of air per hour. This air contains a variable amount of impurities depending on the geographical area, weather conditions, road surface, etc. If dust is not filtered, it can prematurely age the engine. The dust particles would block the injectors and change the flow the of fuel, thus reducing power, increasing consumption and emissions into the atmosphere.

To improve the efficiency of air filters, Compo Tech Co. in collaboration with the Research & Development centre of an important car manufacturer, has come up with an innovative solution. According to customer requirements, we created a “small cup” using 200 micron stainless steel mesh: so far nothing new compared to a classic air filter. The novelty consists in the installation of a ring-shaped neodymium magnet on the small cup.

The ring-shaped magnet attracts the micro particles of ferrous materials contained in the air before they enter the filter. Therefore the magnet acts as a “pre-filter” allowing a higher air flow rate, with less than half the load loss. Thanks to the magnet and the stainless steel mesh combination, all impurities up to 7 micron are guaranteed to be trapped in the filter, whereas the original paper filters generally allow a total particle filtering up to 10 micron.

The ring-shaped magnet designed by Compo Tech Co. for this specific solution is made of NM40UH neodymium coated with a special epoxy resin resistant to humidity, thermal shocks and chemical agents. This type of magnet is licensed for export to the USA, Canada and Japan.

Such air filters allow the engine to breathe better, offering increased protection compared to original paper filters. Furthermore, traditional paper filters have to be replaced regularly during routine maintenance, while this type of filter can be re-used and has a lifetime equal to that of the vehicle.
