More and more often, we hear about SCR technology (Selective Catalytic Reduction). SCR technology is a chemical process designed to reduce NOx emissions from exhaust gases. These systems are commonly used in industrial combustion and in the automotive industry. A reducing chemical agent in a liquid or gaseous state (generally ammonia or urea) is added to the exhaust fumes through a catalyst. The reducing agent has a strong tendency to absorb oxygen thus limiting the formation of NOx within the exhaust fumes forming H2O (water vapour) and N2 (nitrogen gas).

Recently, SCR technology has been applied to heavy goods vehicles in response to legislation limiting exhaust fumes. Euro Standards 4 and 5 (now Euro 6) were much more stringent for goods vehicles than for cars and this is why on European roads, this technology was first used by goods vehicles. SCR is based on a straightforward principle: AdBlue, contained in a dedicated tank.

These tanks are for the most part made of polyethylene (PE) by rotational moulding. They are resistant to weather conditions and UV light as well as deterioration over time, making them suitable for interior use. However the tanks are also made of gloss painted sheet metal, stainless steel, stainless steel and light alloy.

The adoption of SCR technology in Europe has required the creation of a distribution infrastructure. Today AdBlue is available in thousands of filling stations where the so called “upgraded” fuel storage tanks are used with capacities ranging from 210 to 1,000 litres.

The storage tanks must guarantee that the temperature of AdBlue never exceeds 30°C, the ideal condition to make sure that the liquid can be preserved for 12 months.

The quality of AdBlue must be guaranteed, avoiding any contamination during transportation and handling.

The utmost care must also be taken while distributing the product. This is why a dedicated tank is always used with AdBlue as well as a safe dispensing method.

Safety is guaranteed by the presence of a magnet located in the neck of the tank. The strategic position of the magnet makes it possible to enable the AdBlue nozzle to dispense fuel. Without the magnet, no liquid can be dispensed.

The magnet can be located in the tank during the manufacturing stage. Tanks designed for different uses can be adapted thanks to an AdBlue accessory kit.  The adapter kit for tanks consists in a plastic nozzle where the magnet is inserted.
